Question 1
I had my tragus pierced 2 weeks ago. It is healing well. I have 2 questions after reading about your threadless titanium jewelry, which sounds great. My stainless steel barbell feels fine but it is long, so that during the course of the day, or when I clean it, the bar moves forward so that I can see several millimetres of bar. This doesn't look great and it is tempting to push it back in, whenever this happens so that the bar is not visible. I am thus keen to buy something which is shorter and is a better fit. I had intended to wait at least 3 months, as I read that it is unsafe to change jewelry within this period. Would it be safe to replace my barbell with one of yours before three months so that I have sth which does not keep moving around, or do I need to wait until it is completely healed? Not sure what size to buy either, as I do not know the size of my current barbell. I'd also like to be able to wear earplugs which is not possible at the moment. Would a labret make that easier? Indeed would a labret be better than a barbell? Not sure of the difference. Would a gem be possible, or a ball better? Or doesn't it matter? The threadless barbell with disc back [labret type] is the most common for us to use in the tragus, as it takes up very little room in the ear canal, and allows for easy cleaning. You should measure your piercing from opening to opening with calipers to ensure a good fit, and allow at least 2mm [1/16 inch] for cleaning while you heal. Common size is about 5/16 inch.

You should always clean your jewelry before trying to move or reposition it. A slightly shorter piece seems like it would be advisable. If you can have it changed professionally, then you would be in better shape.

Wearing earplugs or earbud headphones is not really comfortable/safe while healing because of germs.

Changing the jewelry should be done with proper safety precautions and a tapered insertion guide to ensure smooth placement. All pieces you get from us will be shipped hermetically sealed and autoclave sterilized by our Statim. Wash before, and change while wearing gloves [preferrably sterile] over a clean towel, so that if you drop the jewelry it will not
bounce or fall down a drain.

Aside from the industrial uses of titanium, nowadays the metal is used for body jewelry. Jewelers are preferring titanium over other metals because of its properties. The metal doesn't react much to stimuli making them ideal for people who are sensitive to other materials. Plus, it is very durable, light weight and will not rust, or corrode under normal use.

In fact, titanium's ability to resist corrosion is one of its most notable properties. The metal comes very close to platinum in terms of anti-corrosive properties. The metal can endure most acids like sulfuric and hydrochloric acids. It can withstand exposures from moist chlorine gas and chloride solutions, as well as salt solutions.

The metal can be made more corrosion-resistance by exposing it to elevated temperatures. But even if you store or use the metal in room temperatures, it will still resist tarnishing. Scientists from the California Institute of Technology have created a range of structural metallic-glass composites, based in titanium, that are lighter and less expensive than any the group had previously created, while still maintaining their toughness and ductility -- the ability to be deformed without breaking.

A paper describing these breakthrough metallic-glass alloys was published in the latest online issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

Earlier this year, the same Caltech group had published a paper in the journal Nature, describing new strategies for creating the liquid-metal composites.

However, there were shortcomings to the alloys presented in Nature. Because they were created for use in the aerospace industry -- among other structural applications -- they needed to have very low densities. Ideally, the alloys would have had densities in or around those of crystalline titanium alloys, whichfall between 4.5 and 5 grams per cubic centimeter (g/cc). The original alloys, made predominantly of zirconium, fell between 5.6and 6.4 g/cc, putting them "in a no-man's-land of densities for aerospace structures."

So the researchers began tweaking the components in their composites, eventually coming up with a group of alloys with a high percentage of titanium, but which maintained the properties of the previously created zirconium alloys.

"When it comes to making jewelry, the Italians are very creative," Weepers continues. "They have huge factories in Italy where they design and make exquisite jewelry items from both stainless steel and gold."

"The Italians are very innovative in their jewelry-making. They came up with these big gold earrings that are actually hollow," she points out. "They give the impression of being big and heavy earrings, but in fact they are very light."
